East Boston Suspension Railroad begins operation.

(Summer) Advertised as a “Suspension Carriage Road at East Boston,” the first elevated monorail in Boston was to connect the islands of East Boston to Lynn. At least one half-mile of its route, from a ferry slip at today’s Lewis Street is completed and runs for nine days.
